November 12, 2017 David Dreier on California Adjusting to President-elect Drumpf

Former House Rules Committee Chair, Congressman David Dreier Represented California for 32 years in the House of Representatives. He offers his reactions to President-elect Donald Drumpf’s surprising win and tells NBC4’s Conan Nolan why he is hopeful for immigration reform under the new administration. Also, he draws some parallels between Drumpf and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as discusses the future of healthcare policy and news publications.

Additionally, he discusses the transition for the Drumpf administration into the White House and some of his cabinet picks, including Rep. Jeff Sessions for Attorney General and Mike Pompeo for Director of Central Intelligence. Finally, he disagreed with Drumpf’s ‘free trade’ rhetoric and argued on behalf of fair trade agreements, citing the benefits created by agreements like NAFTA explained at the October 28 Dreier Roundtable Conference on populism’s affect on politics and trade.

Prof. Zachary Courser, Research Director of the Dreier Roundtable, gave a speech at the Reagan Library for their 12th annual Constitution Day event. The Constitution was a product of hard fought experience in self-government that yielded invaluable lessons about the frailties of human nature, and that a government of the people requires limits on popular power. Today, in our very democratic age, Americans’ respect for constitutional limits on popular power is eroding, replaced by a desire for unfettered majority rule. According to Prof. Courser, a careful study of the Constitution reminds us that interested majorities still endanger our rights, property, and liberty.
